Introduction to the CAS Dance Science: Motor Learning & Training Program

The CAS Dance Science: Motor Learning & Training program is offered by the University of Bern's Institute of Sports Science. This program critically examines theories and application fields of motor research, biomechanics, and training science. It aims to improve participants' competencies in building and designing dance training and teaching/learning processes in both professional and amateur settings.

Graduates of the MAS/CAS in Dance Science can apply their knowledge in various fields:


  • Improving the training and health of dancers in both professional and amateur settings
  • Collaborating on scientific projects in sports science and/or dance science
  • Teaching dance science at dance schools (e.g., B.A. programs in dance or dance pedagogy)
  • Advising the management of dance companies, schools, or senior homes
  • Enhancing their professional practice as dancers, educators, therapists, etc.

Program Structure

The program consists of 22 course days (147 attendance hours) and 16 ECTS points (approximately 480 working hours in total). It is divided into several modules:


Module 1: Motor Control and Learning

  • Duration: 2 x 3 days (4 ECTS points)
  • Content: Motor control basics, motor learning and development, pathologies of motor control, experiments, and exercises on motor control and learning

Module 2: Science of Training

  • Duration: 3 x 2 days (4 ECTS points)
  • Content: Fundamentals and application fields of training science, general principles of athletic training, fundamentals of dance motor skills

Module 3: Biomechanics

  • Duration: 3 x 2 days (4 ECTS points)
  • Content: Mechanics basics, load capacity of biological structures, methods of movement analysis, lab introduction, experiments with rotations and jumps

Module 4: Embedded Research Skills

  • Duration: 2 x 1 day (1 ECTS point)
  • Content: Statistical understanding, handling numerical data series, structure of a scientific paper, literature search and citation

Performance Assessment

The performance assessment for the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Dance Science: Motor Learning & Training includes:


  • Attendance at events (at least 90% overall)
  • Written examination with multiple-choice and open questions
  • Written work in the form of a dance training analysis

Admission Requirements

For the CAS program, participants must have a degree from a tertiary education institution. Exceptions regarding admission requirements can be approved by the program leadership on a case-by-case basis.

  • The tuition fee for the CAS in Dance Science: Motor Learning & Training is CHF 4,500.
  • Fees are to be paid before the course begins.
